riverDefinition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary Jump to: navigation, searchFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing toward an ocean, a lake, a sea, or another river. In a few cases, a river simply flows into the ground or dries up completely before reaching another body of water. Small rivers may also be called by several other names, including stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill; there is no general rule that defines what can be called a river, although in some countries or communities a stream may be defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; one example is "burn" in Scotland and North-east England. Sometimes a river is said to be larger than a creek, but this is not always the case, because of vagueness in the language. A river is part of the hydrological cycle. Water within a river is generally collected from precipitation through surface runoff, groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g., from glaciers). My son and I were watching the ships go up and down the Columbia River and counting the trains going by - there's major railroads on either side of the river and it got me wondering: What do they generally haul on barges and why do a barge instead of a train? Why do a train instead of a truck? Why do a plane instead of a ship? Asked by Top Contributor (R&S) - Mon May 19 14:21:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Barges are still used today for low value bulk items, as the cost of hauling goods by barge is very low. Barges are also used for very heavy or bulky items; a typical barge measures 195 feet by 35 feet (59.4 meters by 10.6 meters), and can carry up to 1500 tons of cargo. Barges on canals (towed by draft animals on an adjacent towpath) contended with the railway in the early industrial revolution but were outcompeted in the carriage of high value items due to the higher speed, falling costs, and route flexibility of rail transport. I'm planning a little trip after graduation for some of my friends. We're going to Colorado and we need to find a nice isolated river, no people around no roads, just nature/ That's what I'm looking for. Please give me some suggestions, and it would be great if they're from experience. Thanks. Answered by Crikey a Wild Ski Bum - Thu May 6 00:45:48 2010 can I make an indoor manmade river with a submersible pump?
Q. I wanted to make an indoor manmade river for an art project. the water at one end would ideally be sent to beginning to give the impression of a constant flow, ie. a real river. would it be possible to do this by attaching a submersible pump to one end of the river, and tracing it back to the beginning?...or would the horizontal path cause problems? Asked by Sean M - Wed Jan 30 13:28:57 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. A submersible pump should work fine. You will just have to tinker a bit with your head flow, as you don't want a gusher pointing up to the ceiling. Using various reducers to drop the size of the outflow, or putting a rock or something to flatten the water stream, should take care of that. You'll want to make sure that you get a pump that has enough power to push the water back up to the head of your stream, too. This sounds like a really intriguing project. I'd like to see it when it's done! Good luck - hope this helps. Answered by Poopy - Wed Jan 30 13:51:08 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "river" Viva La Bam: Bam on the (Season 5, Episode 7)
