In geography, a country is a geographical region. The term is often applied to a political division or the territory of a sovereign state, or to a smaller, or former, political division of a geographical region. Usually, but not always, a country coincides with a sovereign territory and is associated with a state, nation or government.

In common usage, the term country is used in the sense of both nations and states, with definitions varying. In some cases it is used to refer both to states and to other political entities, while in some occasions it refers only to states It is not uncommon for general information or statistical publications to adopt the wider definition for purposes such as illustration and comparison.

Some cohesive geographical entities, which were formerly sovereign states, are commonly regarded and referred to still as countries; such as England, Scotland and Wales – in the United Kingdom. Historically, the countries of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were others. Former states such as Bavaria (now part of Germany) and Piedmont (now part of Italy) would not normally be referred to as "countries" in contemporary English. The degree of autonomy of non-state countries varies widely. Some are possessions of states, as several states have overseas dependencies (such as the British Virgin Islands, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and American Samoa), with territory and citizenry distinct from their own. Such dependent territories are sometimes listed together with independent states on lists of countries, and may be treated as a "country of origin" in international trade, as Hong Kong is. Some countries are divided among several states, such as Korea and Kurdistan.

How do euro countries transition which side of the road you drive on, in different countries?
Q. I don't think every country in Europe drives on the left side of the road. So, logically, there must be countries next to each other that drive on opposite sides of the roads. Are there crossover bridges or something that you go over?

A. The only countries in Europe that drive on the left are islands. UK, Ireland, Cyrus and Malta. So no worries about changing over. I've driven over borders in Africa and Asia which have cross over bridges and somewith lights, some with just signs and some with just men waving their arms a lot.

Why should some countries be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and not others? Who decides?
Q. Does every country have the right to protect it's own soil using whatever means neccesery? How do world communities justify action against countries like Iran? If Iran says they are enriching uranium for non-weapon use what right does any other country have to doubt them? After all the US is a major nuclear power and definately makes (and currently uses) nuclear weapons, so who decides which countrys intentions are good? Response to "Is that so...?" - in fact nuclear weapons are being used every day in iraq and afganistan, most of the weapons the US use are tipped with depleted uranium, which when exploded, enters the atmosphere and travels around the globe, it causes birth defects and cancers. It's called Gulf War syndrome and info can… [cont.]

What countries are donating assistance and money to Haiti?
Q. The USA always seems to be the 1st country, of all 196, to offer aid; but, what about those countries whose profits from oil are they also contributing. This is being asked because the oil rich nations of the middle east did not contribute much if any to the earthquake victims in Turkey. Since they make billions off of the USA are they willing to contribute manpower, money, and resources to victims of the Haiti earthquake?

A. Actually, the Dominican Republic was the first to offer aid. I'm not sure what your point is, though? The United Arab Emirates has never really been known to be particularly humanitarian oriented... But the US's dependence on them doesn't really have much to do with Haiti. A full list of countries that have pledged aid is on wikipedia: There's quite a few.
