ArcMap is the main component of ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of geospatial processing programs, and it is used primarily to view, edit, create, and analyze geospatial data. ArcMap allows the user to explore data within a data set, symbolize features accordingly, and create maps. In addition, it is possible to create and manipulate data sets to include a variety of information. For example, the maps produced in ArcMap generally include features such as north arrows, scale bars, titles, legends, etc. A style-set of these features have been included in the software package. The ArcGIS suite is available at three license levels: ArcEditor, ArcView, and ArcInfo. Each step up in the license provides the user with more extensions that allow a variety of querying to be performed on a data set. ArcInfo is the highest level of licensing, and allows the user to use such extensions as 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, and the Geostatistical Analyst. Maps created and saved within ArcMap will create a file on the hard drive with an .mxd extension. Once an .mxd file is opened in ArcMap, the user can display a variety of information, as long as it exists within the data set. At this time the user will create an entirely new map output and use the customization and design features to create a truly unique product. Upon completion of the map, ArcMap has the ability to save, print, and export files to PDF. The geographic information that is loaded into ArcMap can be viewed in two ways: data view and layout view. In data view, the user can interact with the geographic information presented, and the map elements are hidden from view. Most projects begin in this view, and continue to the layout view for final editing and production. While in the layout view, the user can incorporate a number of useful features such as scale bars and north arrows. These elements are crucial to map-making, and provide clients with appropriate reference information. From Wikipedia under the

Switches between the data and the source view tabs in ArcMaps table of contents Answered by unknown - Thu Dec 17 20:16:20 2009 How do I show every other contour line in ArcGis 9.3?
Q. I have ArcGis 9.3, including ArcMap. How can I display only every other contour line on a map with this product? The map I have shows all the contour lines, which looks like a mess. I would like to show some lines-- maybe every third or every other line-- but there does not appear to be a way to do this. I tried using a selection criteria on the objectid modulo 2, but this always results in an SQL error. Does anyone know how to select or display _just_ ever 2nd or _just_ every 3rd contour line? Asked by violinner - Wed May 5 15:37:22 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If your layer includes contour lines that are invisible, right click on the layer, go to properties, symbology tab, categories, then select "add all values" and click ok. If it didn't help, add more details about your layer. I hope can help you --- You must find a field in attribute table that makes your contour lines different, then use this field in "Select by attributes" to show or hide some contour lines. Send me your shapefile to examine if it's possible or not. majnooon68@yahoo.com (I have ArcGIS 9.2) Answered by Iran - Wed May 5 15:52:27 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "ArcMap" Gas HCA Analyst 4.0 Released By New Century Software
